A retired longshoreman was shot dead early yesterday when someone apparently tried to rob him in the driveway of his home in Queens, the police said.

The owner of the house, Herbert Warren Jr., a retired longshoreman, tried to remain stoic as the home he had lived in for 44 years was carted away.

Then there was Gaetano D'Amato, 68, a retired longshoreman.

Downtown, Benjamin E. Dias, a retired longshoreman of 51, said: "I've been feeling like a part of my family passed away.

For Mr. Rodriguez, the son of Cuban parents, whose father is a retired longshoreman in New Jersey, the attention meant fame before his name was a label.

"One thing about that mayor, he stayed here during the hurricane," said Louis Scott, a retired longshoreman near the wharves on Tchoupitoulas Street.
