In March 1989 Hungary became the first East European state to accede to the 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees (under which states agreed not to expel refugees or return them to their homeland if they would face persecution there).
In 1973 the Protocol relating to Intervention on the High Seas in Cases of Marine Pollution by Substances other than Oil was adopted extending the provision of the 1969 Convention to other hazardous substances.
United Nations approves Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees (aka 1967 Protocol).
Its legal basis is the multilateral treaty Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks of 1891, as well as the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement (1989).
