In the 2005 European Under 23 Championships she took the silver medal, losing individual gold by a hundredth of a second.

He was also one of the few England players that left the European Under 21 Championships with his reputation not damaged.

At the 1999 Under 23 European Championships he finished fifth over the 5000 metres.

He participated with the Netherlands under 17 squad at the 2005 under 17 European Championships, where the Dutch reached the final.

He represented England at all youth age groups up to under-19 level, but missed out on the 2005 Under 19 European Championships because of injury.

On 3 May 2011 Howson was called up to the provisional England under-21 squad for the European Under 21 Championships.

He played in the first two games of the 2009 Under 17 European Championships but missed the third after picking up two yellow cards.
