To be sure, many traditional Democrats, even among those who are more conservative, still find the Republican Party anathema.

We must move to the center and reclaim the votes of traditional, disaffected Democrats.

Throughout the campaign last year he always seemed at his most pointed and most clearly defined when doing combat with traditional Democrats.

As a "new ideas" outsider with upscale support, his real attraction is to independent voters and not traditional Democrats.

At times, he even sounds more like a Republican than a traditional Democrat.

"Whether they want to call me a traditional Democrat or a moderate Republican, it doesn't matter to me," he said.

Many traditional Democrats may find it difficult to cross party lines.

"I think that he's not a traditional liberal Democrat; that's for sure," he said.
