The team burning now is the Chicago White Sox, who are trying to trade Wells, a controversial, highly paid pitcher whose value sinks each time he pitches.
The White Sox are desperately trying to trade Wells, who was 34-14 for the Yankees in 1997 and 1998 but has struggled since last July.
But one official said "there is almost no chance" that the Yankees will trade Wells.
