In the 19th century, therapeutic recreation at the beach became popular for the wealthy.

The primary goal of the program is to stimulate socialization for the patients, said Carolyn Cerky, the center's director of therapeutic recreation.

He is a senior at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in sports studies and minoring in therapeutic recreation.

He expects to complete his requirements for a degree in therapeutic recreation by December.

"We have some real animal lovers here," said the director of therapeutic recreation, Cindi Huckel.

"You're not constantly drilled with facts," said the 19-year-old therapeutic recreations major.

"For many residents, the physical contact is very important," said Merri Buckstone, director of therapeutic recreation at the center.

Other majors include communication, psychology, recreation management, and therapeutic recreation.

Deborah Marks Kahn, assistant director of therapeutic recreation, added: "These birds are quite smart.
