"This entire approach to develop manuals and require practicing psychologists to use them is fundamentally insane," Dr. Levant said.
Although the exact number of practicing clinical psychologists is unknown, it is estimated that between 1974 and 1990, the number in the US grew from 20,000 to 63,000.
Most will be licensed and practicing psychologists in their particular field.
