As a two-year-old, Caveat placed second in the Grade II Lane's End Breeders' Futurity Stakes with Eddie Maple aboard.

At three, Hastings placed second in the Withers Stakes behind Handspring by a head.

In his next race, he placed second in the Saratoga Special Stakes at six and half furlongs.

And after a six-week layoff, he returned in June and placed fourth in the St. James Palace Stakes in Ascot.

Silver Charm lost the third jewel of the triple crown by placing second in the Belmont Stakes to Touch Gold.

He was then placed third to Poitrel in the AJC Spring Stakes, (now Colin Stephen Quality Handicap) of 12 furlongs.

Among his accomplishments, he took the Dwyer Stakes, the Derby Trial, and the Lafayette Stakes, and placed second in the Preakness Stakes to Prairie Bayou.

He also placed second in the A Phenomenon Handicap and the Tom Fool Stakes, and third in the Vosburgh Stakes and the Carter Handicap.

He also placed second at the Champion Stakes, and third in the Eclipse Stakes.

Later that summer, he placed third in the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course as a prep race for the Mid-summer Derby.
