Brunner is widely regarded across Boston as a leader in the philanthropic community.

"I come from a very philanthropic community in Minnesota," she explained recently.

But the philanthropic community, which heavily supported existing institutions, offered few models for the progressive political giving she had in mind.

"When Medicare and Medicaid came along, the philanthropic community turned its attention elsewhere," she said.
