Before 1993, there were eight different municipalities (villages, cities) that merged into the current city.

It was merged into the city of Yokosuka in 1943.

In 1921, however, it was merged into the city of Christchurch.

The two towns merged into the city of Peabody in 1879.

On 1 January 2010 the town merged into the city of Nagano.

On May 1, 2005 the town of Kaneyama merged into the city.

From 2007 it merged into the city of Sagamihara.

The town had spread out three miles from that center by 1892, when it merged into the city of Brooklyn.

On March 22, 2005, the town of Wakami was merged into the city.

On that date, all merged into the city of Niimi.
