The area encompasses a diverse range of habitats, including woodland, mire, open water, dwarf-shrub heath, and cliffs.

The Veluwe features many different landscapes including woodland, heath, some small lakes and Europe's largest sand drifts.

The abbey started rather small but grew over the centuries, until it was some 5500 ha in the Seventeenth century, including farms, fields, woodland, mills, heath, and local chapels.

It grows in several types of habitat, including meadows, marshes, heath, beaches and bars, and arctic and alpine tundra.

It also occurs in a range of vegetation complexes, including coastal and kwongan heath, tall shrubland, woodland and open forest.

Its major collection represents typical plants of northern Germany, from environments including heath, dunes, forests, meadows, and ponds.

The soils are acidic and a variety of habitats, including wet and dry heath, mire, grassland and woodland have formed.

The park contains a great variety of scenery including beaches, sand-dunes, coastal cliffs, coastal heath and pockets of Karri forest.

Smaller areas of other habitats including broadleaved woodland and heath add to the interest.

As such it reproduces environments typical of the region, including heath, hills, moor, pasture, and scree; it also contains an arboretum.
