In a report on expenditures last year, the Community Service Society of New York, an agency supported by the fund, included $29,877 for family services, $93,111 for eviction prevention, $50,519 for supported-housing programs and $157,920 for help in transferring ownership of housing to poor tenants.
In a prepared statement, the group said, "The Westchester Women's Agenda decries the county executive's elimination of $145,000 in funding for Westchester/Putnam Legal Services' eviction prevention and housing resettlement programs."
CSS's Social Services Department serves individuals, families and seniors who are undergoing a temporary emergency with a range of services from eviction prevention, financial assistance to housing and job searches.
It also helps the charities administer numerous programs for the poor, including eviction prevention, day care and mental health counseling.
Compass Connecting Point provides families experiencing a housing crisis access to services including eviction prevention, emergency shelter, health care, child care and educational programs.
"We can't even begin to keep up with the demand for eviction prevention," said Megan E. McLaughlin, executive director of the federation.
An ever-widening portion of charity work in the city is now devoted to eviction prevention, to keeping people who have homes from joining the legions of homeless.
And as far as he is concerned, the new approach to eviction prevention is a success, despite the delay in expanding it to all of the city's welfare centers.
Because The Times pays all overhead costs for the campaign, contributions like the Eliases' are given directly to seven social-service agencies to help provide services ranging from eviction prevention to foster care for disabled infants, to programs that help troubled teen-agers get along with their families and stay in school.
