The Government later dissolved the electoral council, and most of its members went into hiding or left the country.

Nearly two weeks after the elections, no official results have been made public, although it appears that the national electoral council will issue them soon.

Officials close to the electoral council said nearly 80 percent of the 4.9 million ballots cast on Sept. 29 and 30 had been counted.

They challenged the electoral council to try to enforce the ban.

"In 1987 we had a military Government that clearly pronounced itself against the electoral council, hence the elections themselves."

In December 2008, the party registered with the electoral council.

The Constitution entrusted the process to an independent electoral council.

"My position is where the electoral council put me, not necessarily what the people voted for."

Political leaders say they are not prepared to accept an electoral council created by the Government.

It was again excluded from participation in the 2010-2011 Haitian general election by the electoral council.
