Only one other athlete, the American discus champion Al Oerter, has collected gold medals in the same event in four Olympics.

He also became discus champion in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1997.

He became Yugoslav shot put champion in 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1985 and 1986, and also discus champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978.

(The other is Al Oerter, discus champion from 1956 to 1968.)

He was England under 16 discus champion and still enjoys throwing today although he often complains that "he never finds the time."

In addition he is the 2006 Australian Shot Put champion, and he is a three-time discus champion (2004-06).

He had been a discus champion as a youth, and helped to found Stade Mbour football club.

Several of this team went on to play for Crawley Rugby Club and the side also included Richard Slaney, the future British discus champion.

In 1986 he was also the national discus champion for the first and only time.
