He and his family find a cross-eyed lion which they name Clarence and adopt as a household pet.

Ivan Tors first discovered Clarence, the cross-eyed lion, at Africa, U.S.A. and it inspired him to create the film Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion (1965) and the spin-off television series Daktari, which was partly shot on location there.

The basic interlace pattern has roots in Persia, but most of the images are of fantastic creatures with sources in Indian art - cross-eyed lions with bristling teeth, antelopes vomiting rabbits - all depicted with doubled outlines to lend a sense of painterly modeling.
