Only a hundred years ago, costmary could be found in almost any cottage garden, in fact in most gardens throughout Britain.

Allspice is also sometimes used to refer to the herb costmary (Tanacetum balsamita).

Sachets with dried moth-repellent herbs like wormwood, southernwood, costmary, lavender, pennyroyal, lemon verbena rosemary, rue, sage and tansy are called "moth bags."

A native of southern Europe and western Asia, costmary is now naturalized in Europe and North America, being introduced when it was detailed as an ingredient in cookery books of the time.

These herb gardens grew the costmary that was used to flavour ale, the skirret - a carrot-like root - that was mixed with honey to form the fillings of sweet tarts, and the damask roses whose petals were made into jam.
