Both types can cause genital herpes.

Both virus types can cause lip and mouth sores and genital herpes.

Under normal circumstances, the body can fight off these viruses - including the ones that cause herpes and chickenpox - with little effort.

HSV-2 is the virus that typically causes genital herpes, a lifelong viral infection.

Type 1 (HSV-1) usually causes oral herpes, an infection of the lips and mouth.

Type 1 usually causes oral herpes, or cold sores.

It can also cause genital herpes.
