This is a species of southern wet heathlands whose larvae develop in the wet mud of base-enriched flushes or bog pools.

Visitors are not encouraged to visit the reserve as it is dangerous to walk over, with the many partially hidden bog pools often being of a great depth.

It is found in shallow peaty acid water and bog pools.
