An airport spokeswoman said the request shortened the time people waited in line because metal plates in shoes could set off the detectors.

"Very minor incident, no fire," Carolyn Fennell, an airport spokeswoman, said later.

He had had a heart attack and died en route to a hospital, said an airport spokeswoman.

Traffic was not disrupted, said Pamela Kuypers, an airport spokeswoman.

"This morning the terminal looked like Thanksgiving weekend," said Pat Smith, an airport spokeswoman.

All flights in and out of Schiphol Airport were suspended, according to an airport spokeswoman.

An airport spokeswoman who went to the scene after the crash, Theresa Damiano, said the wreckage was in two parts about 25 feet from each other.

That created lines of 30 minutes at the ticket counter of some airlines even before the wait for security screening, an airport spokeswoman said.

The unscheduled landing was not declared an emergency, said Carolyn Fennell, an airport spokeswoman.
