The Mummies of Guanajuato is a book which reprints Ray Bradbury's novelette, "The Next in Line", illustrated with photographs, by Archie Lieberman, of the actual mummies discovered in Guanajuato which inspired the story.

"Will we see actual mummies?"

The room is, I know, full of mummy smell; and no wonder, with so many relics from the tomb, let alone the actual mummy of that animal which Silvio attacked.

It was discovered later that the museum had been home to the actual mummy of King Ramesses I. By that time of that discovery, however, the museum was closed and the mummy back in Egypt.

The latter was a modern day version of Bram Stoker's The Jewel of Seven Stars and featured Valerie Leon as a reincarnated Egyptian Princess, rather than an actual mummy.

Their main function was to provide an alternate haven for the spirit in the event the actual mummy were by some chance destroyed.

When actual mummies became unavailable, the sun-desiccated corpses of criminals, slaves and suicidal people were substituted by mendacious merchants.

This was drawn over the original inscription, which bore the name of the actual mummy - Magdalena Aguilar, and her date of burial which was the 8th of September, 1897.

Q. Is that why you chose not to include any photographs of actual mummies in the book?

She doesn't really know much about Tut, but has seen him a few times, remaining oblivious to his being an actual mummy.
