On 22 May, the unit was assigned to the 4th Virginia Brigade under the leadership of Charles Scott.

Grayson's Regiment transferred to the 3th Virginia Brigade on 22 July 1778, though it still formed part of the main army.

The unit was assigned to the 1st Virginia Brigade on 12 May.

It served first in the 2nd Virginia Brigade and later in the 3rd Virginia Brigade.

The consolidated regiment was reorganized as eight companies and a month later was assigned to the 1st Virginia Brigade.

On 22 May the regiment was assigned to the 4th Virginia Brigade, which was commanded by Charles Scott.

It was relieved from the 2nd Virginia Brigade on 4 December 1779 and assigned to the Southern Department.

Shortly after the regiment fought at Monmouth in June 1778, it was reassigned to the 3rd Virginia Brigade.

On 22 July 1778, the 8th Virginia transferred to the 3rd Virginia Brigade.

From May 1777, the regiment fought as part of the 4th Virginia Brigade in the Philadelphia Campaign.
