Now Washington's edgiest experience is offered on U Street.

But it's only during the last couple of years that U Street has sprouted enough interesting shops to make a daytime visit worthwhile.

"U Street is new and hip."

U Street hasn't yielded completely to the new and affluent.

But with the old U Street steadily fading, the party scene is what takes the eye.

"Now people come in and tell me this is the first time they've been to U Street in decades."
