"The wind made it really difficult today," Spencer said after the race.
Spencer, who is married, said he had found peace in the desert.
"I don't think either of you will be doing anything quite so easily," Spencer said.
"Let happen what may," as Spencer would say when he was in his cups.
"You cannot take something out of your mind that happened such a short period ago," Spencer said.
"We will have to do our jobs, without a question," Spencer said.
"I've worked too hard for two years," said Spencer, who made his only other opening day start in 2000.
Spencer, on the other hand, said he felt good at the plate.
Spencer said as they sat on the floor watching the crowd flow by.
"The numbers are right there for people to look at if they want," Spencer said.
