NPR announced on 10 November 2011 that McPartland was stepping down as host of Piano Jazz.
Still, Piano Jazz soon returned to the air in repeat broadcasts.
After 23 years on the air, "Piano Jazz," is the longest-running program on National Public Radio.
She later worked in another multi-piano group, and developed a reputation as a sympathetic accompanist, good training for the duets that are the hallmark of "Piano Jazz."
"Piano Jazz," which reaches listeners in 45 states and 24 foreign countries, began in April 1979 with Mary Lou Williams as the first guest.
A CD recording of a collaboration with Marian McPartland on her show Piano Jazz was released in 2005.
She is well known among listeners of National Public Radio for her long-running series, "Piano Jazz."
