Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s when squatters began to settle along the Peel River.

At the time he mistook the river to be the Peel River, but realised his mistake on his return journey.

The Peel River runs southeast to northwest through Tamworth.

The Tamworth central business district is the city centre and is located north of the Peel River.

It was named after the Peel River which runs through the area.

On 20 November 2000 approximately 50 homes were evacuated as the Peel River burst its banks.

A new bridge across the Peel River at Nundle was finished in 2008.

The name originally appears at the name of a large pastoral property near the Peel River in the 1860s.

As the delta begins, you'll find the Peel River entering via the left bank of the Mackenzie.

This arguably adds a greater length to the Peel River.
