The Litchfield Hills, like the rest of Northwest Connecticut, are known for their town greens, fall foliage, and historical architecture.

Mrs. Mendelson designed their home and gardens and became a member of the Mad Gardeners of Northwest Connecticut, a mostly professional group.

"Northwest Connecticut is the spookiest place on earth," he said.

That is why Mr. Lendl said he was prompted to create a top-flight course near his home in Northwest Connecticut.

Northwest Connecticut's Housatonic River is particularly good for canoeing, kayaking, rafting and tubing.
