The Mountain Institute (TMI) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to conservation, community development, and cultural preservation in the Andes, Appalachians, Himalayas, and other mountain ranges of the world.

The Mountain Institute has worked with farmers in the Sacred Himalayan Landscape by teaching them to cultivate medical plants, having trained over 12,500 since 2001.

Ms. Laurence, director of the Mountain Institute of TriBeCa, a feng shui school, said the sharp angle balances a similar one on a building diagonally across the intersection.

"The idea of independence from oil imported from the Middle East," said Mr. Bustnes of the Rocky Mountain Institute, "will be achieved the day we are oil-free."

In 2005 a conservation project began promoted by the Department of Environment, the Mountain Institute and had the management support of the Ancash Association and International Conservation (IC).

An ecotourism impact study of this route has been carried out jointly by the Forest Department, the Mountain Institute and the Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC), which is based in Yuksom.

And most trekkers have no idea of their impact on the remote Everest landscape, said Alton Byers, who is leading our expedition as director of the Mountain Institute.

Dr. Reinhard is a specialist in cultural anthropology affiliated with the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and the Mountain Institute in Franklin, W. Va.
