Kirkstall Abbey was acquired by Leeds Corporation as a gift from Colonel North and opened to the public in the late 19th century.

In 1909, Leeds Corporation extended its tramways to Green Lane, Yeadon.

To serve the growing population of the council estate, the Middleton Light Railway, an electric tramway, was built in 1925 by Leeds Corporation.

After his death at Seacroft Hall in 1936, his nephew sold the family estate to Leeds Corporation one year later.
