From 1990 until 2006 it was the home to the Latvian national ice hockey team and until end of the 1990s was host of almoust all Latvian Hockey League teams.

The 2011-12 Latvian Hockey League season was the 21th season of the Latvian Hockey League, the top level of ice hockey in Latvia.

After the Soviet Union broke up, the club participated in the now professional Latvian Hockey League.

Most of his professional playing career Širokovs spent in Latvian Hockey League's club HK Liepājas Metalurgs, twice becoming Latvia's champion.
