The office appeared in the 14th century (or earlier) when it was combined with that of Keeper of the Privy Seal.

He retained his position as Keeper of the Privy Seal until at least 1481.

He was also Keeper of the Privy Seal from 1432 to 1443.

In 1418 he was made Keeper of the Privy Seal which he retained until 1421.

For a short time, (1381-1382), he was promoted to Keeper of the Privy Seal.

He was Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland in 1689.

In 1598 he became the Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland.

Other sources do not list role as Keeper of the Privy Seal.

He was Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland between 1661 and 1672.

He was Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1853 until his death.
