The investigation was reported on Saturday by a Connecticut newspaper, The Journal Inquirer of Manchester.
The deaths of two other National Guard members from the same company are being attributed to exploding souvenir bombs, The Journal Inquirer reported.

Yet The Journal Inquirer had already reported the victim's sexual assault and acquaintances of Mr. Lapointe had mentioned it.
"He ran a very honorable reformist campaign," said Chris Powell, managing editor of The Journal Inquirer, a daily tabloid newspaper based in this Hartford suburb.
Mr. Powell, who is 42 years old, has worked for The Journal Inquirer since it became a daily paper in 1968, and has been managing editor since 1974.
