In the case of Fort Trumbull, the fort itself was unfinished.

"We think it would bring a tremendous advantage to the area, and it really belongs at Fort Trumbull because of its history."

After the Civil War Fort Trumbull was improved by having more modern artillery pieces installed.

After a redevelopment period lasting several years Fort Trumbull was finally opened as a state park in the year 2000.

"I understand the pain and the anger that some of the folks down in Fort Trumbull are experiencing," he said.

"I'd never been down to Fort Trumbull," he said, adding that he had no idea there was a sequoia only a few miles from the arboretum.

Fort Trumbull now serves as a state park with exhibits detailing its history.

State officials were amazed at how quickly Fort Trumbull was renovated.
