The ship was initially allocated to A Division of the Fleet Reserve.

Turpin served at that rank until he was transferred to the Fleet Reserve in March 1919.

He transferred to the Fleet Reserve in June 1946 and retired in December 1952.

When the squadron disbanded on 25 November 1896, she was reduced to Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth.

He transferred to the Fleet Reserve in March 1940.
