"The scale of the coverage in Express Newspapers' titles was so great that they felt something had to be done," he added.
He retired at the age of 60 and became a member of the board of Express Newspapers.
Three years ago, they were in the bidding for Express newspapers, continuing their quest for a newspaper with nationwide circulation.
A spokesman for Express Newspapers declined to comment on the removal of the articles from the company's websites.
"Express Newspapers had had its day," he says.
