Edinburgh West is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood).
Edinburgh West is mostly suburban, but takes in rural areas to the west.
John Barrett won the nomination to defend Edinburgh West at the 2001 general election, which he did by 7,589 votes.
Following the boundary changes in 2005, Edinburgh West now included the areas of Stenhouse and Murrayfield.
He did not contest the seat at the 1918 general election, and instead stood for election in Edinburgh West.
He retained his seat till 1892, when he was elected for Edinburgh West.
