On 24 August 1785 he rose to second lieutenant in his dragoon regiment.
By 1859, he had been given command of the 4th Dragoon Regiment.
He commanded the 5th Dragoon Regiment between 1727 and 1744.

A further name change, to the 11th Regiment of Light Dragoons, occurred in 1783.
In 1751 it was formally renamed as the 14th Regiment of Dragoons.
