Dr. Carter did not believe that racial conflict was inevitable.

"I believe their careers are so mutually important to them that the relationship will last," Dr. Carter said.

Dr. Carter said it is good for partners in a commuting marriage to develop separate circles of friends.

For Dr. Carter, this work - even its scale - is nothing new.

"We have someone from the university in our facilities every day," said Dr. Carter.
