The event is named after Desmond, a champion sire in 1913.

His dam was a daughter of Blank, another Champion sire.

He went onto become a successful stallion and was British Champion sire in 1814.

He also became a leading stallion and was British Champion sire three times.

Regulus was also a very successful stallion, becoming Champion sire eight times.

After retiring from racing he was a successful stallion, becoming Champion sire twice.

He was the Champion sire in 1911, and sired many other good winners, although most of them did better over shorter distances.

In 1982 their Be My Guest was named champion sire.

Highflyer was also a top stallion, becoming Champion sire thirteen times.

He is now one of the top sires, siring 75 group winners to date and becoming champion sire in 2009.
