He received his PhD from the University of Sussex in 1994, supervised by Prof. John D. Barrow in the Astronomy Centre.

The telescope was built by Peter Drew of the Amateur Astronomy Centre, Todmorden.

The Astronomy Centre began in 1965 with the founding of an MSc course, run jointly with the Royal Greenwich Observatory, then based at Herstmonceux in Sussex [4].
