The city has had rapid growth, driven by the north African drought since the beginning of the 1970s: many have moved to the city in search of a better life.

Zimbabwe Severely Affected The southern African drought has devastated crops from Mozambique across to Angola and in South Africa as well.

Because of the north African drought since the beginning of the 1970s many people have moved to the city.

This is because the southern African drought has broken and in recent weeks there have been heavy rains in Angola, where the Okavango River has its source.

According to a study of West African drought based on Ghanaian lake sediments (not eyewitness historical accounts) published in the journal Science in April 2009:

The devastating African drought in 1984-1985 demonstrated that camel ownership can give pastoralists a competitive edge and an excellent chance for survival.
