zhaleika

The zhaleika is a single-tube reed pipe with a horn added to function as a resonator.

Typical ethnic Russian musical instruments are gusli, balalaika, zhaleika and garmoshka.

Other hornpipes include the Spanish gaita gastoreña, the Basque alboka and the Eastern European zhaleika.

The zhaleika was eventually incorporated into the balalaika band, the Hungairian tarogato, and may have contributed to the development of the chalumeau chalumeau, a predecessor of the clarinet clarinet.
