Oblong Woodsia came under severe threat in Scotland, especially in the Moffat Hills.

Scotland's populations of Alpine Woodsia and Oblong Woodsia are on the edge of their natural ranges.

For example, the oblong woodsia (Woodsia ilvensis), which was so popular with the fern-mad Victorians, is now only found as a few clumps in Scotland, the Lake District and Wales.

Dr Heather McHaffie, the Botanics' Scottish plants officer said: "Oblong Woodsia is a small, tufted fern found in Britain in tree-less, rocky habitats above 350 metres.

It is also associated with other ferns, such as Marginal Shield Fern and Rusty Woodsia.
