A suitable water-based glaze can be made by mixing equal parts of water-based varnish with latex flat paint.

Because of this, these coatings should also be avoided; water-based varnishes and paints are considered less harmful, and should be preferred.

The water-based ones are quite easy to apply and dry quickly but they often look patchy afterwards unless you finish off with a water-based varnish instead of the usual oil-based polyurethane.
