Ferrichrome was first isolated in 1952, has been found to be produced by fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Ustilago, and Penicillium.

During Ustilago scitaminea infection, the fungus grows within the meristematic tissue and induces formation of flowering structures, which it colonises to produce its teliopores.

Ustilago nuda infects barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) but there are many strains of Ustilago which infect many different cereal crops in a similar manner.
