The lacrimal gland is a compound tubuloacinar gland, it is made up of many lobules separated by connective tissue, each lobule contains many acini.

Because the glands are branched, and because the tubules forming the branches contain secretory cells, submandibular glands are classified as branched tubuloacinar glands.

Several lobules of small tubuloacinar glands drain into a common duct that leads to the surface of the squamous epithelium, and with histological techniques, use of acid toluidine blue has identified irregular longitudinal rows of ductal ostia in the human oesophagus.
