In some cases survival past birth may occur longer if there is mixoploidy with both a diploid and a triploid cell population present.

This triploid cell divides through mitosis and forms the endosperm, a nutrient-rich tissue, inside the seed.

As the zygote develops into an embryo, the triploid cell develops into the endosperm, which serves as the embryo's food supply.

The triploid cell derived from the polar bodies fuses with one cell from the embryo to become a pentaploid cell (with five copies of each chromosome).

But in armored scales, the polar bodies fuse together into a triploid cell (with three copies of each chromosome), and this triploid cell also winds up in the embryo (Figure 2).
