Some years ago, my sister returned from England with a gift of two sets of traveling cutlery sold by the National Trust.

That still leaves room in the suitcase for stainless steel travel cutlery (a place setting is $4.95 at Terra Verde, 120 Wooster Street, at Prince), and a silk-covered eye rest, $18 at Takashimaya (693 Fifth Avenue at 54th Street).

The big surprise may not be that the idea of modern design has been pushed forward to 2004, with inclusions like a carbon Kevlar and urethane kayak, designed by Murray Broom, but that it has been pushed back to 1821, with a traveling cutlery set in silver and leather in the Biedermeier style.
