translative case

The translative case marks "becoming something" on the noun.

First infinitive has a so-called "long form", having the ending of the nominal translative case and an obligatory possessive suffix.

Though they are not traditionally considered so, the essive and translative cases also can be considered locative, for a system of eight (out of fourteen) cases.

It completes the series of "to/in/from a state" series consisting of the translative case, the essive case and the exessive case.

Thus, if a target state is specific, it is placed in the translative case (-ksi), e.g. lehti vaalenee keltaiseksi "the leaf pales to yellow".

The name "general locatives" is sometimes used of the essive and translative cases (as well as partitive above) because their oldest meanings imply that they have been used to indicate location.
