About 100 residents of Tegua were evacuated by the government because rising sea levels were flooding their island.

The same language is also spoken by the small populations of the two other islands of Linua and Tegua.

However, no precise scientific observations were undertaken by the Fiji-based team of environmental observers who first visited Tegua in 2003 and began to voice this claim shortly thereafter.

One geological study found that of four islands in the group, Tegua had the slowest inferred uplift rate at 0.7 mm/yr for southeastern Tegua.

A further confusion is with some of the terms for the Tewa (Tegua, Tehuas, Teoas) being applied to both the Tewa and (Southern) Tiwa indiscrimately.

In this respect, it is notable that no other part of the coast of Tegua has yet suffered from the visible erosion and waterlogging that have undermined the ground at Litao throughout the past century.

Several other clans-the Mogodi in the west, Terintere in the north, Tozoba in the center, and Tegua and Mada in the south-are originally clans of the Bideyat people who immigrated from the Ennedi Plateau, southeast of Tibesti, around the same time.
