A tannate is the salt or ester of tannic acid.

Albumin tannate (also known as Tannin albuminate) is an antidiarrheal.

This discoloration results from a reaction between the tannates in the oak and the iron in the steel, forming iron tannate, a black compound.

Tannic acid chemically converts the reddish iron oxides into bluish-black ferric tannate, a more stable material.

Today tannic acid is still used in pharmaceutical applications to produce albumine tannate which is used as an anti-diarrhea agent.

C-Phed DM Tannate (containing Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan, and Pseudoephedrine)

It dissolves easily in water or chloroform, but not in benzene, diethyl ether, or petroleum ether, and melts at 90-95 C. Other orally available salts are the hydrochloride and the tannate; suppositories contain the free base.
